Driving through Chile in a camper van is one of the best ways to discover the country’s diverse landscapes — but if you’re visiting from abroad, it’s important to understand the local rules and driving culture. Here’s a complete guide to help you feel confident behind the wheel.
Minimum age: 30 years old (for most camper van rentals).
Driver’s license: A valid Class B license or an international driving permit (IDP) is required.
Documents to carry: Always have your license, passport, rental agreement, and vehicle insurance papers with you.
Rental conditions: Only the drivers listed in the rental contract are allowed to drive the vehicle.
Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
Headlights must be on during the day when driving on highways or rural roads.
Speed limits:
Urban areas: 50 km/h
Rural roads: 100 km/h
Highways: 120 km/h (unless otherwise posted)
No tolerance for drinking and driving. Chile has strict DUI laws — the legal limit is very low (0.03% BAC).
Mobile phones: Only hands-free use is allowed while driving.
Traffic fines: If you get a ticket, you must pay it — it can affect your deposit refund.
Toll roads: Many highways are tolled. Carry cash or a debit card. Most tolls are between CLP $1,000–$5,000.
Fuel: Gas stations are rare in remote areas, so fill up whenever you can.
Google Maps or Waze work well, but also download offline maps just in case (e.g., Maps.me).
Weather changes fast — especially in Patagonia. Always check the forecast.
Road signs are in Spanish, but most are intuitive or use international symbols.
Mountain roads can be steep and winding — take your time and enjoy the views.
Don’t park overnight in cities or on the roadside unless it’s a safe, designated spot.
Avoid driving at night on unfamiliar or rural roads.
Don’t leave valuables visible in the vehicle when parked.
Never cross into Argentina without explicit permission from the rental company and the proper paperwork.
Driving in Chile as a foreigner might feel intimidating at first, but it’s totally doable with some preparation. The roads will take you through some of the most breathtaking places on Earth — and with the freedom of a camper van, the adventure is all yours.
